Two projects in Gozo ‘progressing well’ – Minister Debono
Works on the restructuring of the radiology division at Gozo General Hospital and on embellishing Villa Rundle garden in Victoria are progressing well, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said.
The works are 85 per cent co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development and will continue improving the quality of life in Gozo, she said.
Some of the equipment for the radiology division has arrived and is to be installed over the coming weeks. It includes the digital mammography, the ultrasound unit and the skeletal X-ray unit. The rest of the machinery to carry out body imaging is expected in the coming weeks, including the CT Scan and the Fluoroscopy.
Mrs Debono said that the equipment will make it possible to offer new services at the Gozo General Hospital, reducing the need for Gozitan patients and their families to cross to Malta for such services. The health service in Gozo will improve, benefiting patients and visitors to Gozo.
The Villa Rundle works, Mrs Debono said, will cost about €2.5 million. The garden will be more attractive and accessible and the infrastructure will be better. There will be a recreation zone for children, a visitors’ centre, an open air theatre for cultural activities, a new lighting and irrigation system and other facilities.
Over the past two months a section has been excavated where a water storage facility will be built to be used for irrigating the garden. The old office building has been knocked down, and the concrete passageways dug up to be replaced by new paving. New offices will be built.
Other projects being co-financed by the ERDF include the re-building of part of the road to Xlendi and part of the road to Ta’ Pinu, giving 2.5 kms of new roads. Works on Ta’ Pinu Road are advanced and those on Xlendi Road are making progress.
